Mimouna at Costa

For Moroccan Jews, and increasingly for other Jews as well, the end of Passover and the transition back to eating bread and other yeasty foods is celebrated in grand style with a feast known as Mimouna.

Celebrated at nightfall on the last day of Passover and throughout the following day until sundown, Mimouna is also a symbolic and spiritual event that marks the beginning of spring–a time full of hope for wealth and abundance in the coming year. Families open their homes to all as they host a celebration involving family, friends, neighbors, and food. A family’s kitchen table features many different cuisines including assorted fruits, vegetables, eggs, cakes, sweet meats, milk and wine, butter, honey, jams, and the popular pastry called Moufleta—a flat cake, similar to a crepe, that cooks up quickly from a simple dough that Mimouna hosts can throw together after the sun sets.
